Smart-home features change every few years, but the pathways installed during construction last decades. Pre-wiring is about capacity, neutral conductors at switches, and reachable hubs—not about picking the final app brand under stress.
1. Backbone and homerun philosophy
Run dedicated data cabling from a central cabinet to key rooms; avoid daisy-chaining everything off a single consumer router in a cupboard. Future Wi-Fi upgrades are easier with solid backbone paths.
2. Conduit and draw cords
Empty conduits with pull strings between hub and living areas, cinema zones, and camera soffits let you add fibre or HDMI later without chasing walls open.
3. Power at predictable locations
Spare switched and unswitched outlets for blinds, access points, doorbells, and EV wall units—even if not fitted on day one. Label circuits in the panel by room and function.
4. Neutral at switch points
Many smart dimmers require neutral conductors. Pull neutrals to switch boxes during first fix; retrofitting is disruptive.
5. Documentation
As-built drawings of cable routes, panel schedules, and hub photos save countless hours for the next owner—or for you when you change ecosystem.
Closing. Smart-home pre-wiring is cheap insurance compared with reopening finished walls. Design pathways and power; let the control platform evolve.
